The NFLPA celebrated each player of the Players’ All-Pro first team with a hand-built nero marquina marble sculpture.
The 31 awards we created each feature a distinctive playbook illustration that pays tribute to the recipient’s team and position on the field.
Congrats to these NFL athletes on being named the best of the best by their peers!

Studying my nosy neighbors in Sydney through a group portrait that melds my pietra dura technique with a hand sketch, a sense of place, and a strange fascination with these omnipresent birds. 🇦🇺
Excited to be diving deeper into marble inlay artwork with my hand sketching style. Hoping to make this into a large wall piece that will also generate more remnant materials to create with.

Six Months in Dogpatch is a visual collection that marks the first half year of artistic practice in my San Francisco studio. Each piece is an abstract landscape of natural stone and epoxy dust, carried by water thrown from my tools across six months of sculpture. I’ve dismantled and reframed the by-product as the artwork itself.
Framed originals from Six Months in Dogpatch live in private collections and a 70” framed diptych is currently on view at The de Young Open 2023, the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco’s triennial survey of art from across the Bay Area.

About this series
The game changed forever with the introduction of the Air Jordan 1, arguably the most ubiquitous silhouette of all time. San Francisco-based Artist & Designer Brian Madden celebrates this sneaker icon with the weight of millennia through his signature pietra dura marble inlay sculpture technique.
Each intricate AJ1 sneaker sculpture was carefully crafted by the artist in his signature pietra dura technique, inspired by his experience studying design in Milan & working as a designer for Nike. Each colorway features a unique combination of natural stone elements illustrated by the artist, cut from remnant natural marble slabs, assembled like a puzzle, and finished by hand with care by @brianbmadden.
Created January 7, 2021 to synthesize feelings of frustration and confusion at the storming of the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Stone materials are based on marble observed through C-SPAN video feed in the United States Senate Chamber and inspired by a flustered exclamation from Charles Schultz’ iconic Peanuts comic series.
To kick off the EA Madden NFL 22 season, I partnered with EA Sports and jewelry designer Jason of Beverly Hills to create the 99 Club award experience for the league’s top-rated pros.
I created a regulation-sized NFL end zone pylon marble inlay trophy sculpture with customized gold leaf details, a welcome card signed by John Madden himself, as well as a personalized art-handling crate, and custom packaging details developed in partnership with Jason of Beverly Hills.

“You know, if you do the work, you work hard enough, dreams come true. Those times when you get up early and you work hard. Those times when you stay up late and you work hard. Those times when you don’t feel like working, you’re too tired, you don’t want to push yourself, but you do it anyway. That is actually the dream.”

Pietra dura marble inlay mosaic

Envisioned and built as part of a series of pietra dura (hard stone) marble inlay assemblages following a set of sculptures originally called Air Manchego launched during Portland Design Week 2019. The pieces were inspired by the voracious appetite of sneaker culture, and the desire to honor an icon, using timeless materials in a fresh way.

“Draw Your Attention to the 99 Club”
Natural Stone & Epoxy Award Sculpture, Custom-fabricated wooden shipping crate, commemorative notecard, Jason of Beverly Hills customized packaging design.
Unveiled July 13, 2020.
The game is changing. There is a fresh energy surrounding the players, the plays, and the culture. My goal with the 99 Club award experience was to draw attention to the rising generation. The artistry these athletes bring to the gridiron and the devotion they bring to their craft inspired a new approach to recognizing their achievements while honoring the legacy of Madden NFL. With gestural symbols carved from marble and granite, the 99 Club award evokes John Madden's iconic drawings that have inspired generations on the telestrator, on the chalkboard, and in the playbook.

Nero Marquina & Carrara Marble Assemblage

As I sketched different heart shapes to cut from some remnant marble slabs, the water jet shop owner said that a broken heart would mean so much more than an intact one. He said he’d been through it all in his day. And I really felt that.

Nero Marquina & Carrara Marble Sculpture
2020
Sequence of Nero Marquina & Carrara marble moon phase assemblages inspired by all the time spent watching the moon circle around us in 2020 and all the messages we sent wondering what the future held. Bringing it way back to the original NTT Docomo emoji moons by Shigetaka Kurita, acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in 2016. Everything comes full circle.
It’s not just a phase.
Eero Saarinen designed his iconic #pedestaltable for @knollinc because “the underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world.” At least one part of that observation seems fitting as I considered voting in 2020. And it gave me an idea seeing all those “I voted” stickers flying off the roll in voting precincts near you.
On November 3, 2020, I cautiously optimistically introduced the Saarinen Civic Collaboration coffee table: a Knoll Inc Pedestal table base with a marble assemblage surface made by this voter, cut into an ellipse with the same footprint as Saarinen’s original design.
An election sticker, but make it marble.
